INTRODUCTION

Dear Parents/Guardians & Students,

Pusat Tuisyen Bintang Utama (PTBU) is an established tutorial centre located in USJ, Subang Jaya with its objectives targeted at only the central, core acquisition of the English language.

As English is today the universal unifying international language, be it READ, SPOKEN, WRITTEN or LISTENED to, its ultimate command and mastery 'promises' lifelong unlimited opportunities. Realising its importance the world over, PTBU is glad to announce its tailor designed 'lessons' aimed at meeting all levels of National Examination requirements i.e, from the primary levels, Stds 1-6 (UPSR) to the secondary levels, Form 1-5 (PMR-SPM).

CENTRAL PREREQUISITE

More importantly, since constructive development of the linguistic skills of a language requires a stable foundation build-up: this is to suggest that 'TIME' and the overall 'Support Systems' that accompany learning, are of the essence.

At PTBU and, for optimum effectiveness students will be methodically assessed within a given 3 month period and are then regrouped and categorised accordingly into respective small competitive classes. Again, this is aimed at optimising individual learning 'aptitude' and to encourage a strong 'Language Acquisition Support System' within each classroom while simultaneously providing ease of learning without obstacles.

FOCUS

All aspects of the English Language: from the Receptive skills of LISTENING and READING to the Productive skills of SPEAKING and WRITING are emphasised for the holistic grasp of the English Language, have been strategically put in place to ensure its ultimate transference and success. Teachers have been widely exposed with many years of experience.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

At PTBU, our aims and objectives are varied yet fundamental i.e, we specifically guide Learners through the initial stages of (a) Reading, which will include the elements of pronunciation, diction and intonation…to (b) Listening – thus comprehension! Learners are then expected to paraphrase what was being read.

The Productive skills of Speaking and Writing are likewise introduced. Since these will require good grammar foundation, a comprehensive introduction of grammar takes over, interlaced with speaking and writing exercises. We therefore enable learners/students to embrace the English Language as a means for lifelong practical application in day-to-day communication situations while simultaneously prepare them for their National School Examinations of UPSR..to PMR..to SPM.


SPM (LITERATURE IN ENGLISH): FORMS 4 & 5

At a higher level, English as a language is literally brought to life through the introduction of 'Literature in English' as a specific subject. Here Characters, Themes and their intrinsic Values among others, are brought to focus, learnt and tested upon understanding, comprehension & application leading to examination in the final analysis.
Learners will be coached to broaden their perspectives in a variety of situations.

EFFECTIVE LEARNING OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE

Considering that any language in use is Linguistic by its very nature, ie one’s developed “sensitivity” to its words in use and structure in place: it then becomes critical that when adopting English as a second or even third language, this will rightly require the elements of Time, Mental Acceptance (Attitude) and the proper ‘Support Systems’ that need to be put in place for Language Acquisition to occur successfully.

Failure to recognize these elements, especially that of ‘time’ often results in little, if at all acceptable standards should it be required to be used effectively or employed in its proper perspective.

The suggestion that time is of the essence should serve to inform that starting a child early will definitely derive long term benefits regardless from which angle one looks at it. The consideration that children before the age of adolescence who may not have fully formed “Attitudes or strong biases” automatically puts them in the fore-front of learning. Here, new concepts and/or information to reality are readily accepted and employed. And, while ‘time’ is relative; it nonetheless waits for no man!

Again, the ‘Support Systems’ necessary for language acquisition to accelerate can be easily adopted and imposed within the perimeters of a conducive environment where everyone speaks and learns only in the English Language at any given time.

METHODOLOGY

Teaching of a Language such as English: a living Skill, is delivered purely through hands-on applications. At PTBU, the teacher’s experience serves to set the example at almost every learning stage. Thus, Phonology and its Linguistic components require ‘compassion’ through repetitive adherences. This is to suggest an entirely experiential approach being adopted.

BENEFITS TO STUDENTS

Unlike conventional approaches to teaching of the English Language: at PTBU, students will be taught:
* to inculcate extensive (home) to intensive (classroom) reading for comprehension.

* to read confidently in the face of an audience.
* to apply active and participative listening skills.
* to speak confidently one-on-one and, in public.
* to write especially in preparation for examinations (essays and compositions) as one’s ability to speak is seldom a true reflection of one’s ability to write.
As a rule, PTBU’s obligation towards learning will be steadfast: that of imparting knowledge in the best possible way, using the best possible tools: knowledge, techniques and the human factor compassion.
